Every year billions of dollars worth of food is wasted in the United States, yet some people still go hungry. Food for All is looking to change that.
Food for All is an app that allows local restaurants to sell their food right before closing, for at least half the normal price. The app is available for free in the app store and creating an account is free.
In the Boston area, the app boasts discounted food from restaurants such as Brookline’s Shawarma King, Cambridge’s El Jefe’s Taqueria, and Boston’s Gourmet Garden. But it’s not just restaurants. Cafés and bakeries are also getting in on selling unused pastries or drinks such as quiche, cookies, croissants, and Boba tea.
To order just open the home page, find a restaurant and click buy a meal. Then show up at the restaurant during the specified time slot and get your discounted food.
Each restaurant will give you meal options of what to expect when you order. When you get to the restaurant you can choose which option you would rather have, although it is subject to availability as this is eating what was left over that day.
Food for All prevents participating restaurants from throwing out barrels of food every day, which not only feeds the hungry, but protects the environment.
By reducing the amount of food that has to be grown and transported it helps to lower our greenhouse gas emissions that are made whilst growing plants, raising animals, and transporting the food. By reducing the amount of food that is wasted, Food for All is helping to create a more sustainable future.
