After a disappointing series against the Yankees, Mookie Betts helped bring the Red Sox back to the top spot in the AL East with his 21st home run of the year on Monday.
In the top of the seventh, Betts hit a line drive homer into deep left-center field, giving the Red Sox the edge they needed to get ahead and beat the Nationals 4-3. This early win paved the way to the Red Sox sweeping the three-game series, safely setting themselves at the top of the AL East with a 58-29 record compared to the Yankees' 56-28.
Betts' homer brought him into a five-way tie for eighth place on the overall home run leaderboard, which his teammate J.D. Martinez tops with 26. Betts is also currently in first place in MLB for the season's top batting average at .338.
Betts will get another chance to swing the lumber at Nationals Park when he's there for the All-Star game on July 17.
