Matt Doherty, the Boston University student who took the photo, didn’t think much of it when he tweeted the now-viral picture.
Doherty serves as a public address announcer for some of the school’s lacrosse, hockey and soccer games and just happened to be working the game against Holy Cross, where Belichick’s daughter, Amanda, is the team’s head coach.
Doherty only realized Belichick was at the game at halftime when he saw him walking out of the restroom. When he saw him again, he knew he had to get a picture.
“He was standing there with the dog and his girlfriend and I thought I have to take a picture, no one will believe me,” Doherty said. “I didn’t think much of it.”
He then tweeted the photo with a straightforward caption and it spread like wildfire.
“I was lucky he was kind of looking towards the camera,” Doherty said. “He was facing the field most of the time,”
Doherty actually didn’t notice Nike was wearing a hoodie until after he posted it.
“I posted it on my Snapchat story first and then looked at it was like, “Oh my God,” he said of noticing the dog’s attire.
Doherty even had some interaction with Belichick.
“I said hi to him after,” he said. “I just waved at him.”
