Jerry York almost didn’t answer the phone Tuesday.
When he finally did and heard it was John Davidson, the president of the New York Rangers, York had on thought.
“I thought, ‘oh he’s going to trade one of my players,’” the legendary Boston College coach said.
But Davidson wasn’t calling about any of York’s players, he was calling in his capacity as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee. He called to tell the Watertown native that he will be inducted as a builder this November.
“I had to sit down I was so excited,” York said.
Eighteen players that York has coached have been drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft.
Also inducted this year in the builder category will be Jim Rutherford. Guy Carboneau, Vaclav Nedomansky, Hayley Wickenheiser and Sergei Zubov will be inducted in the players’ category.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 18 in Toronto.
