Marchand makes Conor McGregor proud with goal, celebration

Having lost three in a row, all in regulation, the Bruins might’ve needed an extra lift before their game against Columbus on Saturday.

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor provided a little extra fire to the Bruins’ pregame routine before he dropped the ceremonial first puck on Irish Heritage Night at TD Garden.

Then Brad Marchand closed out a 2-1 victory not just with his 15th NHL career overtime goal, but also a “McGregor Dance” celebration to boot.

“I was hoping I’d score just to do it,” said Marchand, whose goal helped the Bruins extend their lead on Toronto to four points for second place in the Atlantic Division.

“I knew that before the game. It’s not everyday you have an icon like that here and in the room and a presence. So you know just having a little fun with it.”

Coach Bruce Cassidy enjoyed McGregor’s pregame pep talk.

“Yeah, he did a nice job for us. He came into the room before. He’s fired up, that guy. He’s still fired up. I’m glad we won. He would’ve come in and probably had his way with us. Nah, he had a nice few words for the guys before the game. A little different, we’re not used to that.”

Milestones

Marchand’s two points gave him 87, a new NHL career high. … Patrice Bergeron scored the Bruins’ first goal for his 800th career point. … The Bruins have won 11 in a row at home, their longest such streak since they won 14 in a row in the 2008-09 season.
