It’s that time of the week again.
The NHL Network continued its offseason “top players right now” series by revealing it’s “Top 10 Goalies Right Now” list on Sunday.
It should be no surprise to anyone other than people who’ve had an agenda against Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask for more than half a decade that the Boston puck stopper checked in at No. 5 on the list.
It’s also hard to deny the rest of the list includes all the goalies that belong on this. Although Robin Lehner, who was second in the NHL in save percentage (.930) for the New York Islanders last season (he has since signed with Chicago), might argue he belongs here over, maybe, Pekka Rinne of Nashville (.918 save percentage last season). Or perhaps (heaven forbid) he should be on the list instead of St. Louis Stanley Cup-winning goalie Jordan Binnington, who has just one half a season of high-end NHL performance on his resume. But everyone seems content to decide he’s already a superstar because of what the Blues accomplished after
Undoubtedly Lehner is somewhere between 10 and 15 on this list if the Network let it roll that long.
And where would Halak land on this list? It’s telling that he would probably be in the top 15-18 yet he was willing to come to Boston for less playing time but more of a chance to win. He might still cash in next summer as an unrestricted free agent at age 35 (his birthday’s in May).
