Double-A Portland finished May by pulverizing the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) 20-2 on Friday. During the offensive display, Bobby Dalbec and Tate Matheny each went deep twice.
But the pair didn’t stop there.
Dalbec came back the next day and went yard two more times, bringing his home run total on the season to 12. Dalbec’s average has improved to .250 through the first two games in June. After hitting .197 with two home runs and two doubles in April, Dalbec batted .279 with eight home runs, seven doubles and a triple in May,
Matheny wasn’t able to homer on Saturday, but he did hit another one for the Sea Dogs as part of his 3-for-4 performance on Sunday. Matheny now has four home runs on the year, all of which he’s hit since May 27.
Tanner Houck was the beneficiary of the 20-2 win over Binghamton. It was the righty’s best start of what was an up-and-down month. He struck out seven, walked three and surrendered three hits over six shutout innings.
Ward still shoving
Although a pair of runs scored on Thad Ward’s watch for the first time since May 9 in Class A Greenville’s 5-3 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles) on Saturday, neither was earned. He only lasted five innings, but still struck out seven. The righty has gone 26 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run.
