Red Sox Farm Report: Durbin Feltman, Portland bullpen made things tough for opposition in April

Red Sox reliever Durbin Feltman

Since his first relief appearance of the season with Double-A Portland, Red Sox prospect reliever Durbin Feltman has had one outing where he surrendered a run. His ERA over this stretch may sit at a 3.00, but Feltman has posted a scoreless inning in five of his last six outings.

Furthermore, the 22-year-old righty has struck out eight in that span and only walked two hitters. The one hit he’s given up in this stretch was a two-run home run.

Unrelated to his performance on the field, Feltman was also the recipient of a small surprise in the Sea Dogs recent trip to Hartford (Rockies).

As much as Feltman might be the top prospect among Portland’s relievers, he may not be the headliner of this deep bullpen.

Adam Lau has been nearly unhittable in his 7 2/3 innings of work this April. The right-hander has surrendered three hits and struck out 14. Walks are a bit of an issue (four), but Lau hasn’t allowed those to manifest into any earned runs (0.00 ERA, one unearned run).

Andrew Schwaab is right behind Lau in the ERA race (0.79) giving up one run in his 11 1/3 innings of work on the season. He has 18 K’s, but control could prove to be a bigger issue for him. Schwaab has given away six free passes and drilled three other hitters.

Matthew Kent has served as Portland’s long reliever to start the year and was also the spot starter when Darwinzon Hernandez received the call to Boston. Kent has made four appearances in relief, spanning 15 2/3 innings with a 1.15 ERA.

Lastly, Daniel McGrath, who appeared in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to the Hartford Yard Goats — though the loss was through no fault of the 24-year-old. He had another scoreless outing. McGrath has a 1.64 ERA, striking out 15 over 11 innings in six appearances. Though, control is an issue for him, as well. He has walked seven to start the season
