For the fifth time in 2019, Jenrry Mejia blew a save opportunity for Triple-A Pawtucket. The righty only got one batter out in the ninth and gave up two runs in the 4-3 loss to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) on Thursday. The runs scored on three hits, two singles and a double, and a sacrifice bunt — the only out Mejia recorded.

Mejia’s ERA is up to 5.13 with the PawSox and opponents are hitting .268 against him on the year. He is 7-for-12 in save opportunities.

Ward tosses another outing without allowing an earned run

It’s nearly been a month since Thad Ward last gave up an earned run. The Red Sox 2018 fifth-rounder extended his streak without an earned run on Thursday in Class A Greenville’s 7-3 win over the Western Virginia Power (Mariners).

Ward struck out nine and didn’t walk anyone over six innings. One unearned scored on his watch and the Power had four hits against the righty.

Since May 14, Ward has not given up an earned run over 32 1/3 innings. During the span, he has 36 strikeouts and four walks. Ward has also lowered his ERA to 1.84 while his WHIP is down to 0.98 and opponents are only hitting .187 against him on the season.
