Nick Lovullo, son of former Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, made his return to Triple-A Pawtucket’s lineup on Tuesday after being sent down to Double-A Portland in late April. While with the Sea Dogs, Lovullo only had a hit in one game, going 2-for-4 against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) on April 27. He finished the stretch in Portland 2-for-11 (.182) with an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts in four games played.

On Tuesday, Lovullo started at shortstop for the Red Sox, going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored against the Norfolk Tides (Orioles). As much as he struggled in Portland, the 25-year-old hasn’t had many issues at the Triple-A level. Through his six games in 2019 with Pawtucket, Lovullo is 6-for-20 (.300) with two RBI and the one double.

In addition to Lovullo’s performance, Sam Travis and Gorkys Hernandez each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hernandez hit a solo shot in the 5-1 win. Travis is now hitting .241 for Pawtucket.

Jenrry Mejia was back on the mound to finish things in Norfolk. He threw a scoreless ninth, though he did walk a batter and give up a hit. Tuesday marks the first time Mejia has walked a batter in back-to-back games. It was also the first time he didn’t strike anyone out in seven appearances.

Dustin Pedroia late scratch in Portland

Dustin Pedroia was set to play seven innings for Double-A Portland on Tuesday, but was pulled not long before first pitch. The less than ideal field conditions due to inclement weather likely led to the decision; especially with Pedroia telling Chris Mason of the Eagle-Tribune he felt good not long before being pulled.

Dustin Pedroia is feeling good. Told me he was fitted with a new brace after the pop in New York. Optimistic this one will work better.

The Sea Dogs won 4-2 over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) without Pedroia, in part thanks to Bobby Dalbec’s triple that knocked in C.J. Chatham and Cody Asche, both of which had an RBI in the win, as well.

Although Dalbec’s average currently sits at .205 on the year, he has reach base safely in all but two of the 27 games he has played; which explains why his on-base percentage is 159 points higher (.364) than his batting average.
