When Paul Pierce had his number retired in Boston, Ray Allen wasn’t there. Allen said he wasn’t even invited, though Pierce made it sound like he was.
Based on the way things have gone over the years, it wouldn’t be stunning if Allen wasn’t at the Celtics’ retirement of Kevin Garnett’s No. 5 next season.
But there was another number retirement ceremony Allen was invited to and recently attended — Miami’s retirement of Dwyane Wade’s No. 3
In the course of the Heat’s celebration on Friday leading up to Saturday’s jersey retirement, Wade addressed some of his teammates in attendance — including Allen, to whom Wade said, “We thought Boston sent you over here to be a spy.”
That’s when Udonis Haslem chimed in.
“They don’t (expletive) with us, we don’t (expletive) with them,” Garnett said back in December. “But it’s cool though. It’s a mutual understanding, in which we have respect for each other. … We go to All-Star games, they’re on that side, we’re right here.”
Point is, don’t be shocked if someone responds to Haslem’s comments.
