Despite his team's come-from-behind, 14-10 win over the Mariners Friday night, Alex Cora probably had an idea that the subject of Hanley Ramirez was going to come up.

As was first reported by investigative reporter Michelle McPhee, it is believed Ramirez is under investigation for a role in drug trafficking ring. (For more details, click here.) Through his agent, Adam Katz, Ramirez denied any knowledge of the investigation.

After the Red Sox' 51st victory of the season, Cora offered his take on the controversy.

"Surprised," said Cora when asked about his reaction to learning of the report. "You know, I heard it, I read it and I guess people are going to ask me about it. The only thing, the organization didn't know about this and I didn't know about this. Our decision was made basically on baseball, baseball related and I hope it's not true."

The report comes exactly one month after the Red Sox designated Ramirez for assignment, and three weeks out from when the first baseman/designated hitter became an outright free agent. The 34-year-old remains unsigned.
