WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It looks like Drew Pomeranz's latest rehab assignment won't be one and done.
While there is no official word as to the plans for Pomeranz, who gave up five runs over 2 2/3 innings in Pawtucket Monday night, Red Sox manager Alex Cora suggested that he would recommend some more time in Triple-A before making a commitment to bring the lefty back to the big league club.
"Whatever the line says, he says he feels OK. I actually talked to Walk (Pawtucket pitching coach Kevin Walker) today about a few things. Personally, I feel he needs to go down there and show that he's healthy and straighten up his mechanics," Cora said. "That's very important. We'll talk about it. From my end, and I'm not the GM or president of baseball operations, it would be good to have another one.
"(Pomeranz) feels great. He feels good. Obviously a lot of off time in between starts. You guys know it's a grind for him to repeat his delivery. Hopefully, in the next one, he clears that up, he finds his release point and it will be a better one."
- Dustin Pedroia remains in New York, where his injured knee was examined by Dr. Riley Williams Monday. While Cora still had no specifics about the doctor's findings, he did get the impression that the results were a step in the right direction.
"Pedey, he's still with the doctor. Actually, I had a long text from him. It seems like they're finding stuff out that is actually on the positive side," Cora said. "The way the text was written it seemed very positive. I tried to call him but he was still with the doctor. And they're going through exercises and all that stuff and try and figure out they can maintain him on the field. It's not only about the knee, it's about the other stuff around the knee. His quad and all of that, keeping him strong. We'll talk to him later on today and sit down with Brad and Dave and go from there. He's probably going to stay there the whole week, working out and see what happens. But, overall, positive."
- Tyler Thornburg will likely be activated Wednesday, with the Red Sox wanting to protect themselves in the bullpen Tuesday, not knowing how long starter Brian Johnson would be able to go.
- Cora said he believes the Red Sox might have found some reasons for David Price's performance in New York, but didn't believe tipping pitches was part of the problem.
"Today we watched a little today. We'll keep picking up stuff from the outing but saw a few things that we feel we can do better so I'll keep watching," the manager said. When asked if pitch-tipping was part of the equation he added, "No, no, no, no, no. I mean we're looking at everything but nothing like black and white right now but I think we're going in the right direction."
