Cape Cod Baseball League cancels its season

One baseball tradition is not coming back in 2020.

The highly-regarded Cape Cod Baseball League announced Friday afternoon it was canceling its season due to "health concern and safety needs" emanating from the current COVID-19 crisis.


A statement from the CCBL said: "Following CDC guidelines and medical recommendations, the league determined it would be impossible to guarantee the safety of players, coaches, umpires, host families, volunteers and fans during this unprecedented health crisis."

The CCBL is considered the premier collegiate summer baseball league in the nation, having been founded in1885. Teams are located in Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Cotuit, Falmouth, Harwich, Hyannis, Orleans, Wareham and Yarmouth-Dennis. One of every six Major League Baseball players as played in the Cape Cod Baseball League. There are annually 300 CCBL alumni playing in the majors and more than 1,250 all-time.
