This we know: Unless he is traded, Mookie Betts will be a Dodger for a long, long time, getting paid A LOT of money in the process.
After signing his 12-year, $365 million extension with the Dodgers Wednesday Betts becomes the second-highest paid player in Major League Baseball, and -- as Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci points out -- the wealthiest under-six-feet MLB player in history by a long-shot (topping Prince Fielder).
So, what does the Betts' contract actually look like? Here is a glimpse:
- Betts will be paid his scheduled $27 million for 2020, which is now prorated to about $9 million due to the shortened season.
- He receives a $65 million signing bonus.
- $115 million is deferred.
- His annual salary for 2021 and 2022 will be $17.5 million.
- If Betts is traded, the deferred money is converted to present-day value.
- The deal does not include an opt-out or no-trade clause.
