WASHINGTON, D.C. -- There was some optimism heading into Drew Pomeranz's first rehab start since being put on the 10-day disabled list.
Pitching in a simulated game at Fenway Park last week, Pomeranz displayed improved velocity while not experiencing any pain from the biceps tendinitis that had landed the lefty on the D.L. And after the exercise, he relayed to WEEI.com the importance of getting things right this time around.
"You have to be ready to go this time. There's no more time to mess around and have another break," Pomeranz said. (For all of his comments, click here.)
Much like most of Pomeranz's season to date, the outing with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox didn't go as planned.
Starting for the PawSox against the Twins' Triple-A club, Pomeranz gave up five runs in 2 2/3 innings, giving up four home runs.
He got off to a horrific start out of the gate at McCoy Stadium, giving up a leadoff homer to Byron Buxton, before, three batters later, allowing a two-run blast to Kennys Vargas.
After two strikeouts to begin the second inning Edgar Corcino added a third homer.
LaMonte Wade would end Pomeranz's night with two outs in the third inning with a solo shot on the 56th, and final, pitch.
