HOUSTON -- Well, this hasn't worked out as planned.
Just eight days after being activated to the Red Sox' 25-man roster, Dustin Pedroia has been placed back on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee. The move is retroactive to May 30. With Mookie Betts also going on the DL, the Red Sox called up both first baseman Sam Travis and reliever Bobby Poyner.
Pedroia appeared in just three games since his return to the Red Sox' lineup May 26, going 1-for-11. He was most recently scratched from the batting order in the series-opener against the Astros.
To make room on the roster when Pedroia was initially activated, the Red Sox designated Hanley Ramirez for assignment. Ramirez officially became a free agent Friday.
"It's hard to simulate major league games and intensity and things like that. And they knew that," Pedroia said Thursday. "They just said, 'Make sure you're honest.' They told me, 'There are going to be days you feel terrible.' I started laughing. I'm thinking that's not going to happen. But it does. That's a part of it."
