J.D. Martinez not happy with MLB punishment of Red Sox

Some in the sporting world believed the Red Sox got a slap on the wrist from Major League Baseball when it came to punishment for their 2018 sign-stealing scandal.

J.D. Martinez has a dramatically different view.

"If they went to court with that, it would get thrown out. There was nothing there," Martinez told the Boston Globe. "The judge would laugh."

The April 22 report issued by MLB pinned primary blame on video operator J.T. Watkins, who got a one-year suspension without the ability to participate in his previous responsibilities for another season. The Red Sox also were stripped of a second-round draft pick in this June's amateur draft.

So, in Martinez's view what was the reason for the punishment without glaring transgressions. He believed it stemmed from the Red Sox being caught relaying signs via a watch in 2017 and the subsequent warning issued by MLB.

"They had to do something," the Red Sox designated hitter/outfielder said. "They really didn't find anything."

And it wasn't just that there was a punishment that irked Martinez. It was who got the brunt of the discipline -- Watkins.

"That pissed me off. It wasn't right," Martinez told the Globe. "They just ruined this guy's career with no evidence."
