A pair of major league infielders were killed in a car crash early Friday morning in Venezuela.

Luis Valbuena, a free agent who played with the Angels in 2018, and Castillo, an infielder who spent last season with the Giants and Astros, were involved in the fatal car crash Yaracuy. The driver, former major leaguer Carlos Rivero who played briefly with the Red Sox in 2004, survived the accident. All three men were playing for the Venezuela Winter League club Cardenales de Lara.

Castillo, 37, appeared in 112 games for the Giants in 2018 and 15 with the Astros, having spent his previous four years in Pittsburgh.

Rivero's only big league action came during a four-game stint with the Red Sox in 2004, getting one start at third base. He had four hits in seven at-bats with a walk during the late-August/early Sept. appearances.
