Newly-acquired Red Sox Zack Godley being tested right away

The Red Sox want to see what they have in Zack Godley sooner rather than later.

Less than 24 hours after the team officially announced the signing of the pitcher to a minor-league contract they will be starting him in Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage at Fenway Park.

"Throw one or two innings tomorrow, and then I think he's got a bullpen in a couple of days after that and I think we're planning on pitching him the second game against Toronto," said Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke after his team's latest scrimmage Friday night. "So whether it's starting, whether it's two, three innings later, we're not sure yet."

"He threw two innings a week ago, so a week ago today, he was in a competitive game. That's good and it allows us to go ahead and pitch him and if the first inning is good tomorrow, probably go back out for a second."

Godley, who was cut loose by the Tigers earlier in the week, has been in Boston the last few days getting cleared physically.

The 30-year-old righty has spent five years in the major leagues, winning 15 games in 32 starts with the Diamondbacks in 2018. He split his time with Arizona and Toronto in 2019.

The Red Sox now have 57 participants in their player pool.
