Could Kyle Dugger actually be a linebacker? One scout thinks so.

Before he answered any questions from Mike Mutnansky on "Mut at Night" Friday night Jim Nagy had a question for the show's host regarding the Patriots' first pick in this year's NFL Draft.

"My question is this: What position do you think he plays?"

Nagy, the director for the Senior Bowl and former Patriots scout, immediately had his query volleyed back at him. The answer? It might surprise some.

"Everyone has been focused on (linebacker) Isaiah Simmons (the No. 8 pick in the Draft) and how versatile he is. And even Jeremy Chinn (Pick No. 64), another one of our Senior Bowl guys, has gotten a lot of love for his versatility. Kyle Dugger is as versatile as either one of those guys. The test numbers align with either of those guys. Kyle is really, really unique," Nagy said. " He can play strong safety. He has played some free safety. He has played deep and he has the range to do it. He ran 4.41 last spring when the scouts came into time him. And that's untrained. That's the best indication of if a guy can run or not is how we time him in the spring of his junior year before he gets all that nonsense Combine training. Very few schools let these kids run anymore in the spring. Lenoir-Rhyne thankfully let those guys run.

"So he has played some free safety and he has that range. But I really think he is a Will linebacker, is what I think he is. I heard a great interview with Mike Mayock at the Combine and he was talking about label-less players and that's the way the league is going to. And Kyle Dugger is a label-less player. Call him whatever you want, but Bill is going to be able to move this guy around and really create mismatches or at least match the mismatches of the opponent. Offenses are starting to morph into a lot of hybrid players. You have got the Evan Engrams, the hybrid wideout tight ends. Well, Kyle Dugger is the guy who is going to take those guys away."

Proud to announce Lenoir-Rhyne SS Kyle Dugger has accepted an invite to the Reese's Senior Bowl! @KingDugg_3 is the only D2 player in our 2020 game. Over 90 NFL scouts have visited @LRBearsFootball this fall. Thanks to @Drew_Cronic and staff for making this special day happen. pic.twitter.com/QyDtY6XkLu

The idea that Dugger -- who is listed as a safety by most everyone -- could morph into a "Will" linebacker (or weakside linebacker) didn't seem to be on a lot of evaluators' minds when breaking down the 37th overall pick in the Draft. But listening to Nagy, who saw Dugger perform at the Senior Bowl as the only Division 2 participant, a case can be made.

"The reason I say is that he is going to be a Will linebacker is the day I was at Lenoir-Rhyne, the day I was up there he was 220 pounds. If you're a guy at 220 pounds at that age, at D-2 you don't have the Alabama or Clemson training table set up," Nagy said. "He could be 230 in a heartbeat. This guy could show up in August in Foxboro and be 230 pounds. And if you're 230 pounds you're a linebacker. Call him whatever you want to call him. He is a label-less guy and there is not a better coach in the league to figure out how to match that guy up."
