We now have a timetable for Christian Vazquez's return.
Prior to the Red Sox' game against the Rangers Monday night, Alex Cora announced that Christian Vazquez would be undergoing surgery on his fractured right pinky. The procedure is expected to keep the catcher out for 6-8 weeks.
Vazquez injured himself while sliding into second base Saturday night in Kansas City. A day later the catcher told reporters the oven mitt he wore was a big part of the problem. "That was my first time wearing it. And the last time. It got stuck when I slid."
Cora noted that the Red Sox were comfortable with their current catching situation, with Sandy Leon getting the majority of the playing time and Blake Swihart backing him up.
"It's always a big blow for the team. We have to move on," Cora said. "There's a reason Blake was on the roster throughout the season and we tried to use him early in the season and it didn't work out as far as game time then when we released Hanley (Ramirez), we gave him a shot and then we got Pearce and he didn't play but now he's here and we're going to use him. We have to make sure we keep Sandy fresh too. We're not going to run him out there six or seven days in a row. He'll play."
