The Red Sox and Cubs have made a trade.
Former Sox general manager Theo Epstein and new Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom agreed to a deal Tuesday that is sending pitcher Travis Lakins to Chicago in exchange for either cash considerations or a player to be named later. Lakins was designated for assignment Thursday after the Sox acquired lefty pitcher Matt Hall from Detroit.
The Red Sox also announced Bobby Poyner -- who was DFA'd to make room for former Texas reliever Jeffrey Springs -- cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lakins appeared in 16 games for the Red Sox in 2019 over five stints with the big league club. The 25-year-old finished with a 3.86 ERA and .258 batting average against, giving up one home run over 23 1/3 innings. He was also recruited to play basketball at Butler by current Celtics coach Brad Stevens out of high school.
The Red Sox 40-man roster remains maxed out.
