Dustin Pedroia exits in second inning with left knee discomfort

While most everything had gone as planned for Dustin Pedroia in his return from his knee injury, this was not part of the blueprint.

The Red Sox second baseman was forced to exit from his team's game against the Yankees Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium after flying out to right field in the second inning. The team announced the departure was due to left knee discomfort.

Pedroia, who got the start at second after getting Tuesday's series opener off, was replaced by Eduardo Nunez, who has been bothered by a back injury.

The 35-year-old Pedroia is 2-for-20 to start the season, having started six of the Sox' 19 games. He served as the Sox' designated hitter Sunday and Monday.
