Once thought to be a key part of the Red Sox relief-pitching equation, Heath Hembree has seen his season take another turn for the worse.

According to a major league source, Hembree will be heading to the injured list for a second time this season with what is being classified as an elbow strain. (Alex Speier was first to report the news.)

Hembree originally was on the IL from June 14 until July 4 with a right elbow extensor strain, having struggled since his activation. The righty has allowed 10 runs (3 home runs) and six walks in nine innings.

He last pitched Thursday night, giving up a run on two hits while continuing to exhibit diminished velocity. Upon being taken out of the game Hembree could be seen exiting the dugout with pitching coach Dana LeVangie and head trainer Brad Pearson.

One option to replace Hembree on the 25-man roster is Ryan Brasier, who has pitched well since his demotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. The righty has given up just one run over his five innings, striking out six and walking one. The Red Sox also have to get Brian Johnson on the roster to start one of the games during Saturday's doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, although a spot is going to be made available for the twin bills extra man.
