FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Andrew Benintendi was going to be a prize client for any agent. So when he became available after his former representative, Jason Wood, ran into some controversy, it was understandable the big name agencies came calling.

But after joining his parents in meeting with three separate agents/agencies (one of which was believed to be Scott Boras), Benintendi chose Casey Close of Excel Sports Management. Alex Speier of the Boston Globe was first to report the decision.

Friday, Benintendi explained to WEEI.com why Close ended up being his new guy.

"I met with him. I was with my parents and a few other people and I think we had the most comfort with him," the 23-year-old said. "He's kind of low-key like I am, so we thought he would be the best choice."

Benintendi still is two full seasons away from becoming arbitration-eligible but is positioning himself as one of Major League Baseball's bright young stars. In 151 games last season, Benintendi hit .271 with an .776 OPS and 20 home runs. He is slated to hit second in Alex Cora's lineup this season.
