SEATTLE -- The Red Sox wasted little time notching their first run of the 2019 season.
With one out in the first inning J.D. Martinez rifled a single past Seattle third baseman Ryon Healey, scoring Mookie Betts from second base to give the Sox' a 1-0 lead over the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Betts was on base after notching the Sox' first hit of the season, an opposite-field bloop single to right field. He moved to second when Rafael Devers claimed his first of the year, a single into right.
The one run would be all the Sox could get off Seattle starter Marco Gonzales, who got Xander Bogaerts on a 4-6 fielder's choice and then Mitch Moreland via an inning-ending ground out to second base. The lefty hurler did retire Andrew Benintendi on the first pitch of the season via a ground ball to first baseman Jay Bruce.
