Thanks to another blown save and a bunch of rain the Red Sox have eliminated an off day.
The Sox and Royals weren't able to finish off their series finale Wednesday night, having the game suspended after being forced into a rain delay with the scored knotted at 4-4 in the 10th inning. The game will pick up at 1:05 p.m. on Aug. 22, which was originally slated to be an off day before the Red Sox head out for their series in San Diego.
"There’s a lot of people upset about that one," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora of having to play on the scheduled day off. "No golfing, or Sea World or Legoland. No marina, no, whatever. It is what it is. There was no other option. We’ll play it and we move forward.”
The rain delay, which began at 10:47 p.m., lasted 1 hour, 49 minutes.
The game lasted as long as it did due to the Red Sox' American League-leading 21st blown save of the season, with Nathan Eovaldi allowing the Royals to tie things up with a run in the seventh inning. Darwinzon Hernandez also contributed to the Kansas City comeback, giving up a run in the sixth, as well.
The Red Sox, who fell behind 2-0, evened things up in the fourth inning on a two-run blast from J.D. Martinez. Xander Bogaerts then gave the hosts a lead by plating a pair with his fifth-inning double.
