Red Sox workout tracker: Ron Roenicke thinks camp is going smoother than expected

(Without the ability to put fans in the stands, we will allow for a daily glimpse into the Red Sox' Spring Training 2.0 workouts at Fenway Park.)

2 p.m.: Jackie Bradley Jr. is Zooming ...

- "Me personally, I'm not fearful. But I think you should have a respect ... You should be cautious."

- "Everything is kind of moving fast right now, which I think is good."

- Talking about having to head into free agency with this kind of season he said, "It's unique but it's something out my control. It's out of a lot of guys' control." Said everything right now is speculation.

- Talking about social justice he said, "There's a lot of feeling, emotions, hurt, pain that go along with a lot of things that have been voiced. It's not going to be fixed overnight. It's going to require change. It has to start with the change of the heart."

- "Hopefully we can lift some spirits and do something great."

- Talking about the set-up for Spring Training 2.0: "I have zero complaints about what they have done."

- Some of the challenges come with not being able to show the camaraderie between teammates.

- Said he has been doing a lot of learning to equip himself with knowledge about social issues that have been going on. "We have to show a lot more love in this country, no matter what it is."

- Chose not to cite specific experiences regarding racism throughout playing career.

- Said looks at pros and cons of playing and came to conclusion that it was best for him and his family to play.

1:33: Sign Of The Times Dept.: After J.D. Martinez lost the grip on his bat, it flew out toward the third base coaching box where coach Ramon Vazquez was nearby. Normally Vazquez would have walked over, picked up the bat and brought it down to the hitter near home plate. Instead, Martinez had to walk all the way out to the bat where the coach was left to only nudge it toward him with his foot.

12:50: Ron Roenicke is Zooming ...

- No updates on COVID-19 tests

- Ryan Weber, Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree looked good in their live BPs.

- So far things have gone smoothly with Red Sox. "We're expecting to have issues and we haven't had it so far. They're happy campers so far and that's how we want to keep them."

- Says they have been going in with a Plan A and Plan B depending on testing, weather, etc. "So far really happy with how everything has gone."

- Says because of sprint of a season might have to push relievers a little bit more than normal.

- Bobby Dalbec hasn't worked out yet. Still going through some "intake things."

- Says Brandon Workman deserves closer role. "He's got the ninth inning right now until something else happens."

- When asked if he was more or less confident could execute a season after through the first few days he said, "From our point of view, I'm more confident."

12:30: Mitch Moreland is Zooming ...

- He is 'hoping' they finish the season but acknowledges the uncertainty. Says he thinks because of precautions players are "in a good spot" for time being.

- "I think I will be ready in three weeks."

- Haven't practiced holding baserunners at first any different. "Right now I'm planning on holding them like I always do."

- "I think anybody would be lying to say it wasn't going to be a challenge. ... There's no guarantee in this."

- "It's actually pretty cool eating breakfast looking out over the field in the suite."

- Said doesn't know if the leadership role in the clubhouse is going to be a priority right now. Explains how there isn't a whole lot sitting around in groups.

- The games part of spring training doesn't have as much of an impact as just being on feet. Feels won't lose a whole lot from not playing other teams.

- "Usually you say a fast start is 60 games. That's all we got." Said Xander Bogaerts emphasized the other day about peaking early.

- Did not bring family with him, driving up from Alabama by himself. "That part of it is going to be hard."

- Missed the first day of workouts because of a pending test. "As of right now we just have to make the most of it and hope (tests) come back sooner than later."

12:05: Two pitchers who got a chance to face Red Sox hitters for live batting practice (with no cage) were the presumed No. 4 starter Ryan Weber and closer Brandon Workman.

To begin with, Weber faced Andrew Benintendi, Xander Bogaerts, and Jose Peraza without any hard-hit balls against him before giving way to Workman, whose first batter was J.D. Martinez. Ron Roenicke watched from the third-base coaching box, with pitching coach Dave Bush directly behind the plate in back of a screen.

Weber is coming off a Spring Training 1.0 having made quite an impression, not allowing an earned run over his nine innings while striking out 11 and not walking a batter.

11:47: We have another notable name opting out of the 2020 season: Braves outfielder Nick Markakis.

Markakis said talking to #Braves' Freeman on the phone, hearing how sick he sounded, made Markakis "open his eyes" and think about it. Has three kids. Also said said "biggest thing is we play this game for the fans" and to not have them part of that "is tough."

11:30 a.m.: The Red Sox are working out!

With news coming down that both the Astros and Nationals have canceled their Monday workouts due to an inability to receive COVID-19 tests and results, the Red Sox continued their schedule seemingly without a glitch.

Under cloudy skies at Fenway the hitters were first on the field to go through a round of batting practice, with the catching trio of Christian Vazquez, Kevin Plawecki and Jonathan Lucroy jumping in the cage to hit against batting practice pitcher Mike Brenly (who was wearing a mask while throwing.)

It would be an absolute shock if all three catchers didn't make the Opening Day roster, particularly considering the number of players allowed to begin with will be 30. Even when it appeared the season was going to start on time back in March, manager Ron Roenicke was suggesting there was a good chance he would be carrying the trio on the 26-man roster.

While Vazquez is clearly the starter, Plawecki was one of the standouts in Spring Training 1.0, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with six walks. Lucroy also came on as the camp went on, ending up hitting .300.

Plawecki is an interesting signing by the Red Sox considering how highly-touted he was coming out of Purdue, going No. 39 overall in the 2012 MLB Draft (two spots in front of the Sox' pick of Pat Light). His offense has never caught up to a well-respected defensive skill set, coming into 2020 with a .218 career average in five big league seasons.

The next round of hitters -- J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Moreland and Jose Peraza -- hit against bench coach Jerry Narron, who unlike Brenly chose not to pitch with a mask. Regarding the hitters who chose to cover their face in the group while partaking, Peraza was the only one of the group to wear a mask.
