Two hundred and fifteen workers were supposed to be on the job at Hadlock Field for the Portland Sea Dogs' home opener Thursday. That's not happening.
But thanks to the generosity of the Sea Dogs' ownership, each and every one of those employees will still be able to come away with a paycheck.
According to the Portland Press-Herald, game-day workers will receive monthly paychecks based on their 2019 pay. The team has 18 full-time employees, all of whom will be keeping their jobs.
"This was very important to Bill and Sally from the start," Sea Dogs President Geoff Iacuessa told the Press-Herald. "It was never a question of if we would do it, but rather figuring out how we could do it."
The Sea Dogs -- the Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox-- were scheduled to play 70 home games this season.
"This will be a very rough stretch for our business financially,” Sea Dogs Chairman Bill Burke told the newspaper. "We’ve cut back on as many non-people related expenses (as possible).
"We decided (to pay the workers) because we have an incredible group of people who have supported our team, and have been incredibly loyal over the years. ... We wanted to give them one less thing to worry about in the middle of all this uncertainty."
