Wondering why there hasn't seemingly been any legitimate traction regarding a Mookie Betts trade? There now might be a clue.
According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox have been asking for two high-end prospects in exchange for Betts along with taking on David Price and at least a significant portion of the three years, $96 million left on the pitcher's contract.
The ask would seemingly be too aggressive for almost any team (even the Dodgers) considering the acquiring club would be adding $59 million in payroll for 2020 alone (if Price's full deal was taken on) with Betts in line to make $27 million for the coming season. They would also be getting the All-Star outfielder for just one guaranteed year.
It is a cost rival executives tell Olney is most likely too high even for a player the caliber of Betts.
A source told WEEI.com a few weeks back that the Red Sox weren't actively shopping Betts, with Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom stating last week that he expects the 27-year-old to be on the Sox' Opening Day roster.
