NEW YORK -- This wasn't the pitcher the Yankees were hoping for.

When New York acquired Sonny Gray from the A's in a non-waiver trade deadline move last season it was supposed to be a difference-maker for Brian Cashman's team. It hasn't been, and Saturday night drove home that point.

Coming into his latest start, Gray had totaled a 9-12 record with a 4.39 ERA in 26 outings with the Yankees. And while there had been some really bad appearances, the righty hadn't experienced anything like what the Red Sox handed him this time out.

Gray lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits, the most notable coming off the bat of Rafael Devers in the first inning via a two-out grand slam.

He now has a 9.35 ERA against the Red Sox in four starts as a Yankee, having allowed six runs in three innings in his only other meeting with the Sox this season.

The result this time was an extremely loud chorus of boos from the Yankee Stadium crowd as Gray walked off the mound.
