Sebastian Vollmer
The Patriots didn't have a consistent player at right tackle protecting Brady until Vollmer was selected in the second round of the 2009 draft. Right away he bounced back and forth between left and right tackle, but became the full-time starter at right tackle the following season.
Born in Germany, Vollmer didn't play football until he was 14 years old, but did play football at the University of Houston. He was a tight end before switching to tackle after a few seasons.
Vollmer started 80 of his 88 games played and was a second team All-Pro in 2010. He also was part of two Super Bowl winning teams.
While he wasn't named to any Pro Bowls, Vollmer was instrumental to the Patriots' success, especially when it came to flipping back and forth between right and left tackle due to injuries on the offensive line. Not a bad career for a player who was pretty much unknown prior to the 2009 draft.
Vollmer didn't play at all in the 2016 season due to an unknown injury, although it was reported he lost close to 70 pounds. He ultimately retired in May of 2017.
