As the midway point in the 2019 season nears, the Red Sox are making a few tweaks to some of their top prospects roles.
Tanner Houck, the Red Sox' first-round pick in the 2017 draft, has transitioned to the bullpen, although his first relief appearance didn't go so well. In 1/3 of an inning on Saturday, he allowed six runs on two hits, while walking two.
"We do think he’s someone who could help us in the bullpen," Dave Dombrowski told reporters last week in Toronto.
As a starter, Houck is 8-6 with a 4.30 ERA over 15 starts with Double-A Portland.
Another prospect to change positions of late is C.J. Chatham, the Red Sox' second-round pick in 2016, as he played second base for the first time over the weekend after being a shortstop his first few years in the system.
The organization could be looking for a long-term solution at second base, and Chatham could be a candidate. In 59 games with Double-A Portland this season, he is batting .318/.358/.430.
