FOXBOROUGH -- There was a big-name missing from Patriots practice Monday.

Quarterback Cam Newton was among several players missing from the media-viewing portion, which was for stretching and light individual work.

According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the absence is excused.

Newton is the assumed starter given how the reps have been split in recent sessions.

Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer are behind him on the depth chart and are liking battling for the backup spot on gameday.
