The Bruins beat the Hurricanes, 5-2, Thursday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, but it wasn't their best performance.
Trailing 2-1 going into the third period, the Bruins scored four times, including two early power-play goals, to come away with the victory.
Appearing on Mut & Callahan Friday morning, Don Cherry said the game was a wake-up call for the home team.
“I think that was the game that Carolina had to win, that first game," he said. "I think the Bruins got a little wake-up call and they will be a lot better in the second game.”
Cherry has been a big supporter of Brad Marchand over the years, he just wishes he would stop with some of his on and off-ice antics.
“I really like him," he said. "He got two assists last night, he assisted on the winner. I thought he was going to shoot and he fooled everybody. He passed it to [Patrice] Bergeron. I don’t know why he does that stuff. He gets himself in trouble. He was doing so well. He’s my favorite Bruin. I just wish he didn’t do that stuff. I don’t understand it. I thought the press treated him pretty good. I don’t think anybody ever got on him too much. … I don’t think Mr. [Jeremy] Jacobs is very happy about that stuff because with the image of the Bruins it can be tough. I think he’ll be OK. I think he’s got straightened out.”
As for the rest of the series, Cherry likes the Bruins.
“Bruins are going to win," he said. "Just watch the penalties at the start. You watch, [they] will be a better team Sunday on Mother’s Day.”
Game 2 is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. at TD Garden.
