On Sunday night, ESPN's Field Yates had a Twitter thread where he revealed the Patriots offered Tom Brady a multi-year deal last summer during training camp, but it was his preference to go year-to-year.
In addition, an important step for the Patriots when it comes to a potential return is understanding what Brady is seeking in a new deal.
Yates joined Ordway, Merloni & Fauria to expand on what he said, including why it's important for the Patriots and Brady to have a back-and-forth discussion.
"Well, I think they have a sense of what he would want," he said. "If last year's offer wasn't enough to get the job done then I think probably you have to understand that you're going to ante up, right? At the same time, this is a takes two to tango situation obviously, but it might be helpful in their mind if they have that conversation with Tom (of), 'Hey, what else can we do here? What is it going to take for this to get past the goal-line?'
"Whether that winds up resulting in a deal or not remains to be seen, but I think that where we have assumed that the next step is the Patriots sending Tom some level of offer, there is going to have to be back-and-forth discourse where Tom is going to have to convey some of what he wants besides what was included during their last discussions of an offer during training camp last year."
Yates was asked what he believes will happen at the end of the day and he predicted ultimately Brady will stay in New England.
