There was some big news in the NFL on Monday when the Buccaneers released star defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, who was due $13 million this season.

The 31-year-old joins a group of solid defensive tackles on the open market, but it likely won't last very long given his talent.

Having not made the playoffs in any of his nine NFL season, it's being rumored he would like to play for a team who will be in the playoff mix and several have connected him to the Patriots. The Tampa Bay Times, who first reported the release, was one of them, and so did ESPN's Adam Schefter.

McCoy has recorded at least six sacks in six straight seasons, and finished last year with 28 tackles and six sacks in 14 games.

The Patriots re-signed Danny Shelton on Monday, but there could potentially still be a need for another big body up front, especially one as talented as McCoy.
