In order to get Mohamed Sanu onto the roster, the Patriots needed to clear some cap space.
The Patriots had around $3 million when the trade was made, but they got more with a move involving offensive lineman Shaq Mason.
According to ESPN's Field Yates, they converted $1.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, creating $1.4 million in cap space for this year.
Sanu has a cap hit of $3.8 million this season.
It's unclear exactly where this leaves the team in terms of cap space moving forward.
