This spring, Jared Veldheer was penciled in as the Patriots' swing tackle following the departure of LaAdrian Waddle this offseason.
But, the veteran offensive tackle retired in May after signing just over a week before. This left the team scrambling for depth on the offensive line and was part of the reason why Marshall Newhouse saw extended time as a starter this season.
Veldheer was still property of the Patriots on their reserve/retired list, but was released from it this week so he could join the Packers.
Speaking to reporters in Green Bay, the veteran said it was a case of there wasn't a spot for him with the Patriots, so he asked for his release and then he signed with the Packers.
"I think having time to feel certain things and really be able to get my body right," he said when asked what made him come out of retirement. "Then, the whole timing component with how everything worked out as pretty good."
It is semi-interesting as Veldheer could be viewed as an upgrade over some of the tackle depth the Patriots have right now, but it doesn't matter as he's now in Green Bay.
