Jerod Mayo, Joe Judge react to being on NFL Media's list of young potential head coaches

FOXBOROUGH -- Last week, NFL Media published its annual list of some young coaches who one day could become NFL head coaches.

Two Patriots assistants were on the list -- first-year inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, as well as wide receivers/special teams coach Joe Judge.

When asked about it Monday, the two had very different responses.

"Someone sent it to me," Mayo said. "I would be lying if I said I never wanted to be a head coach. I know it's a long way away. Just trying to learn as much as I can from Coach (Bill) Belichick and the rest of the staff. I try to pick the offensive coaches' minds, as well. I'm trying to just get this all-encompassing view of the game. It's been great. The good thing about being here in New England whether as a player or a coach is it's all about football and nothing else. It's been good."

Meanwhile, Judge was just focused on this week's opponent.

"To be honest with you, at this point, if I was thinking about anything past the Ravens, I would be looking for another job," he said.

This has been a different year for Judge, as he's added wide receivers coach to his mix in addition to his special teams duties. He said it's all been positive.

"I expected to come to work early and stay late and that is what it's been," Judge said. "I always expect that. To me, it's been fun getting to work in more avenues of the team and keep working in football. Maybe it's a little bit more challenging for my wife, with me being absent a little bit more. But as far as doing both, whatever mode I am in at that time I try and go full speed. If I am in a offensive period or an offensive meetings I am all offense, when it goes to special teams I am all special teams.

"I have a lot of help on and off the field that makes it possible. I am very appreciative to Cam Achord and Troy Brown, who do a great job and help me do this. Coach Belichick has been very patient with this. He's been very accommodating. To handle both roles — it's definitely been different this year, but it has been very positive."

Judge is 37 years old, while Mayo is 33.
