Joe Montana knows a little something about what it takes to be a franchise quarterback for the 49ers, and when it comes to Jimmy Garoppolo, he wants to see a little bit more.
"I think it's still a little early for it, myself," Montana said on NFL Network's Good Morning Football. "He's obviously has a lot more success in the games he's played in so far than the other quarterbacks that have been there recently."
After signing a massive contract this offseason, Montana noted this is a big year for the 26-year-old.
"This year will be a big tell on it," he said. "They paid a lot of money for him, but I think there's some belief there that he'll be there for a while."
In six games (five starts) with the 49ers last year, Garoppolo threw for 1,560 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions, leading them to a 5-0 record in the games he started.
