The Celtics got some bad news Friday.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Marcus Smart will undergo surgery on his thumb, but there's hope he can return sometime in the playoffs. There was a belief Smart could play through it and not need surgery, but after multiple tests this week it appears that is not the case.
Smart is the Celtics' best defender and will obviously be missed.
The Celtics are dealing with a number of injuries, as besides Smart, Kyrie Irving has been dealing with a knee injury, Al Horford has been sick, and Jaylen Brown is recovering from a concussion.
Daniel Theis tore his meniscus and had season-ending surgery Thursday, while Gordon Hayward doesn't appear to be able to return this year following his ankle injury the first game of the year.
