The Red Sox got some good news, for now, on Wednesday.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Chris Sale is not expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. The left-hander had a MRI earlier in the week after feeling elbow discomfort after throwing 15 pitches to hitters for the first time since last August on Sunday.
There were a number of different people involved in the decision as the Red Sox consulted with Dr. James Andrews as well as Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
This does not mean Sale is completely out of the woods, but it seems the worst-case scenario has been avoided, at least for now.
Sale was already going to start the year on the injured list because of having pneumonia at the start of spring training.
