Red Sox acquire Marlins relief pitcher in trade

The Red Sox added some depth to their bullpen with a trade on Friday.

The team acquired right-handed reliever Austin Brice in a deal with the Marlins for minor league shortstop Angeudis Santos. To make room for Brice on the 40-man roster, Marco Hernandez has been designated for assignment.

Brice, who is 27 years old, has pitched for the Reds and Marlins over the course of his career. He set career-highs last season with the Marlins in ERA (3.43), innings pitched (44 2/3), appearances (36), and strikeouts per nine innings (9.27). He held opponents to a .214 batting average and a .676 OPS, with right-handers batting only .192 against him.

He became the first player born in Hong Kong to appear in a major league game in 2016.

Santos spent last season with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox.
