Patriots could have realistically signed Jameis Winston if they wanted

With Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer as the top two options at the quarterback position, the Patriots have been linked to a few of the remaining free agent quarterbacks, including Cam Newton and Jameis Winston.

Of course, Winston signed with the Saints over the last few days and based on his contract, the Patriots could have realistically added him.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, Winston received a one-year contract with a base value of $1.1 million. In addition, he got a $148,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $952,000 and $3.4 million is available in incentives. Even though the Patriots have limited cap space, they could have made this work on their books.

If the Patriots, and Winston, felt it was right he would have made some sense in what is shaping out to be a bridge year for New England. But, ultimately it seems the Patriots are perfectly fine with Stidham and Hoyer.

The 26-year-old threw for over 5,000 yards last year, which included 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

Winston will backup Drew Brees and then become a free agent again next offseason when there will be more starting opportunities.
