FOXBORO -- The Patriots have drafted a quarterback.
With pick No. 133 overall, the team selected Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham. The team then had pick No. 134, but traded it along with pick No. 243 to the Rams in exchange for pick Nos. 162 and 167 (both fifth-round picks).
Stidham joins Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer and Danny Etling in the quarterbacks room. The selection doesn't mean the Patriots feel right now he's Brady's successor, more so he has talent and one day could potentially be. It is too early to tell.
Here are three things to know about Stidham.
-- The Auburn quarterback has been projected to the Patriots really since the pre-draft process began. He's more of a developmental player than some of the other options like Ryan Finley and Will Grier, but it's been said he's a tireless worker and takes well to coaching. He's a similar selection to Etling last year, but with much more upside.
-- Stidham started his college career at Baylor, but in 2016 following the sex abuse scandal and much of the coaching staff leaving, he transferred to Auburn after spending a short period of time at a junior college, but did not play football. He was their starter the past two seasons where he passed for 3,158 yards in 2017 and 2,794 yards in 2018.
-- He was a team captain last fall, continuing the trend for the Patriots to pride themselves in taking leaders.
