Stephon Gilmore reportedly helps Patriots free up cap space

It isn't an extension for Tom Brady, but the Patriots have freed up some cap space.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Patriots have converted $8.5 million of Stephon Gilmore's contract into a signing bonus, thus creating $5.67 million in cap space for 2019. This leaves the Patriots somewhere in the $7-8 million range in terms of cap space, as they have been right up against it in recent weeks.

This certainly gives the Patriots the opportunity to sign a few more players.

There could be more maneuvers to come to free up even more cap space, but this was a good start.

New England still has needs at wide receiver, defensive line and offensive tackle that it likely would like to sure up before the draft.
