The Patriots have signed a tight end, and it's an interesting one.
As part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, tight end/fullback Jakob Johnson has been signed by the team. The 24-year-old can make the initial 53-man roster, but if he doesn't he can be signed to the practice squad, although he cannot be signed to the active roster during the season.
In the German league last year, he caught 43 passes for 474 yards with four touchdowns. He played in college at the University of Tennessee where he caught three passes for 23 yards.
Right now, the Patriots have Matt LaCosse, Jacob Hollister, Stephen Anderson and Ryan Izzo as tight ends on their roster, but Johnson feels like a long-shot to make the team.
New England is no stranger to German players as Sebastian Vollmer had a solid career with the Patriots, while defensive tackle Markus Kuhn was with the team during training camp in 2016.
