Julian Edelman reportedly is facing a four-game suspension for using a performance-enhancing substance.
The wide receiver released a statement last week where he said he didn't know what happened.
"I am very sorry - I don't know what happened," he said via Instagram. "I've taken many, many tests obviously over the course of my career, and nothing like this has ever happened. I apologize to the Kraft family, my coaches, teammates and fans. As this matter is being appealed, I can't say anymore but no matter what, I will be ready to play and pursue another championship with our team and for Patriots fans around the world."
According to MMQB's Albert Breer, Edelman's result was triggered by a substance that wasn't immediately recognizable and the testers are still analyzing it. The report also notes the positive test was from a couple of months ago, which rules out a stimulant like Adderall.
Some might wonder how a player could be suspended when the exact substance isn't known, but it's happened before. Pro Football Talk noted in 2013, four Raiders players tested positive for THG, a substance that wasn't initially detectable in urine tests, but after a lengthy investigation it was found.
Edelman is appealing, but if the suspension stands, he will miss games against the Texans, Jaguars, Lions and Dolphins.
